Constructed by the Nazca people over 1,500 years ago, the Nazca lines are a series of massive, stylized artworks built upon a stretch of desert between the towns of Nazca and Palpa. The figures, shapes, and lines were created by the careful removal of dust-coated stones from the landscape; the resulting images are up to 900 feet (270 m) in length.
Exactly how the Nazca managed to create such detailed shapes without the aid of an aerial perspective remains unknown, but researchers theorize that they developed a primitive surveying system, allowing them to achieve remarkable detail in their artwork. It’s also believed the Nazca created these shapes during—and in response to—a period of increased solar eclipses.
