ITINERARY

If you enjoy challenging physical activities, are passionate about nature, and fascinated by the history of ancient civilizations, this route is the perfect choice for you. Explore this outstanding example of Inca architecture on a demanding trek that will test your physical and mental limits while offering an unforgettable adventure.

Choquequirao, meaning “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua, is perched high above the Apurímac River and surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks. Unlike Machu Picchu, this astonishing site is less known and only accessible on foot, yet it’s three times larger and just as impressive as its famous neighbor. Join our tour and discover the secrets of this magnificent place that is only beginning to gain recognition.

DAY 1: Cusco | Capuliyoc – Chiquisca – Playa Rosalinas – Santa Rosa

Your incredible journey begins at 4:30 a.m. when we pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco for a five-hour drive to Capuliyoc in our private transport. Along the way, you’ll marvel at the stunning views of the Salkantay and Humantay mountains.

Upon arriving at Capuliyoc (2,890 m / 9,482 ft), you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast and meet your talented chef and skilled muleteers, who will ensure your belongings reach each campsite safely and provide you with quality meals.

After starting your trek, you’ll descend for about three hours through the breathtaking Apurímac Canyon, admiring the imposing Padreyoc and Qoriwayrachina mountains. You’ll then stop for lunch in Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,234 ft).

Refreshed and energized, you’ll continue for another hour and fifteen minutes to the valley floor at Playa Rosalinas (1,500 m / 4,921 ft), where the roaring Apurímac River (meaning “Speaking God” in Quechua) awaits. This river features Class V rapids, making it ideal for rafting.

Finally, you’ll ascend for two and a half hours to Santa Rosa (1,970 m / 6,463 ft), your first campsite. Here, a delicious dinner and well-earned rest await.

DAY 2: Santa Rosa | Marampata – Choquequirao Archaeological Complex – Marampata

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll depart at 5:30 a.m. for a three-hour zigzag climb to Marampata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where you’ll be awed by the canyon and snow-capped peaks. After a short break, you’ll hike another hour and thirty minutes to Choquequirao (3,050 m / 10,007 ft).

Spend the day exploring this vast complex, learning its history from your guide. Choquequirao is larger than Machu Picchu, but only 40% has been uncovered. Discover plazas, temples, and terraces, including the iconic white stone llama statues guarding the sacred Apu Qoriwayrachina mountain.

Enjoy lunch at the site before returning to Marampata for dinner. At night, gaze at the starry sky and reflect on your journey.

DAY 3: Marampata | Santa Rosa – Playa Rosalinas – Chiquisca

After breakfast, retrace your steps to Santa Rosa (1,970 m / 6,463 ft), visiting a local sugarcane farm to learn about Cambray, a regional drink. After lunch, descend to Playa Rosalinas (1,500 m / 4,921 ft) to cool your feet in the river before climbing back to Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,234 ft) for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: Chiquisca | Capuliyoc – Saywite Monolith – Conoc Hot Springs – Cusco

Depart early to avoid the heat, hiking back to Capuliyoc (2,890 m / 9,482 ft). Bid farewell to your team and visit the Saywite Monolith, a sacred Inca rock. Relax in Conoc Hot Springs before returning to Cusco, arriving tired but fulfilled.

M&R Travel Recommendations – Machupicchu Expeditions

If you’re planning a trip to Cusco, it’s important to be prepared to make the most of every experience, whether you’re taking day tours or multi-week expeditions. Here are some key recommendations:

  1. Acclimatization: Cusco sits at over 3,300 m.a.s.l. (10,800 ft). To avoid altitude sickness, we recommend resting on your first day, staying hydrated, and drinking coca or muña tea.
  2. Proper Clothing: Cusco’s weather varies by season. Bring layered clothing, a rainproof jacket for unexpected showers, and comfortable walking shoes.
  3. Required Documents: To enter Machu Picchu, you must carry your passport or ID. If you’re a student, a valid student ID may grant you ticket discounts.
  4. Tickets & Reservations: Machu Picchu and other attractions require advance tickets. Book early, especially during peak season (May to September).
  5. Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. UV radiation in Cusco and the Peruvian highlands is intense.
  6. Cash & Payments: While many places accept cards, it’s best to carry cash in soles (PEN) for small expenses, especially in markets or rural communities.
  7. Respect for Culture & Environment: Cusco and its surroundings hold immense historical and natural value. Follow site regulations, avoid littering, and respect local traditions.
  8. Trust the Experts: For the best experience, book with specialized agencies like M&R Machupicchu Expeditions, offering tours designed for all types of travelers—ensuring quality, safety, and unforgettable adventures.

By following these tips, you’ll be ready to enjoy the magic of Cusco and its breathtaking destinations with the best preparation. We can’t wait to explore with you!
