ITINERARY
The 5-day, 4-night Ausangate trek is an adventure experience that crosses the stunning landscapes of the Andes, offering breathtaking glaciers, lagoons, and streams. During the journey, we will also have the opportunity to meet the local inhabitants, who have deep respect for nature. This trek is ideal for those in good physical condition.
Day 1: Cusco – Ocongate – Tinqui – Upis
We depart from Cusco at 06:00 am for the 5-day Ausangate trek in a private vehicle heading to the town of Urcos. Along the way, we pass through the district of Urcos until we reach Tinqui Ocongate. We will begin our expedition from the village of Quinsapucyu and arrive at Upis Huarmisaya, enjoying incredible views, including the impressive Ausangate Mountain. Along the way, we will observe local farmers in their traditional attire. Once we reach the campsite, our chef will have a delicious lunch prepared for us. In the afternoon, we will have free time to rest at the camp.
Day 2: Upis – Puca Cocha – Ananta
On the second day, we will wake up early at 5:00 am, and coca tea will be brought to your tent. Then, we will quickly pack, enjoy a light breakfast, and begin hiking toward the Arapa Pass, located at an altitude of 4,958 meters above sea level. We will descend gently until we reach our lunch spot near Lake Pucacocha. After enjoying a delicious meal, we will continue hiking uphill toward the second pass, called Pucacocha (5,000 meters above sea level). Then, we will descend for two more hours until we reach our campsite called Ananta. Along the way, we will appreciate different glacier peaks, rivers, small lakes, alpacas, local shepherds, and llamas. Of course, you will always be accompanied by your guide, who will provide information about the area.
Day 3: Ananta – Rainbow Mountain – Alqatari
On the third day, we will also wake up early at 3:00 am, and coca tea will be brought to your tent. Then, we will enjoy breakfast and immediately begin hiking toward the Surini Pass, located at an altitude of 5,051 meters above sea level. From this point, we will see the stunning Rainbow Mountain in the distance. Then, we will descend toward the circular lake and continue hiking uphill until we reach the Rainbow Mountain, where we will enjoy the incredible colorful mountains and their surroundings. Afterward, we will return and descend to our next campsite called Alqatari, where we will have lunch and have the entire afternoon free to rest and prepare for the next day.
Day 4: Alqatari – Palomani Pass – Jampa
We will wake up at 5:00 am, and coca tea will be brought to your tent. Then, we will enjoy a quick breakfast and immediately begin hiking toward the highest point of the Ausangate trek on our journey, the Palomani Pass, at an altitude of 5,300 meters above sea level. You will feel like you are in the sky, higher than any other trek in the entire Cusco region. You will appreciate the impressive canyons and valleys of the Andes, and keep in mind that you might spot condors flying nearby. You will be right at the foot of Ausangate Mountain, considered sacred by the locals. Along the way, we will admire different glacier peaks, bubbling streams, rivers, small lakes, chinchillas, alpacas, local shepherds, and llamas. Then, we will descend and pass through the villages of Huchuy Phinaya, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will continue our hike to our campsite called Jampa, where we will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 5: Jampa – Pacchanta – Cusco
As on all days, we will wake up early at 5:30 am, and coca tea will be brought to your tent. Then, we will begin hiking uphill for about 3 hours to reach the last pass at 4,900 meters above sea level. From here, we will admire more glacier peaks and lakes, and then we will descend toward the 7 lagoons, where we will enjoy the beautiful landscape provided by the majestic Ausangate. After enjoying the scenery of the 7 lagoons, we will continue hiking to our lunch spot called Pacchanta, where our chef and muleteers will prepare our last lunch. Here, there are charming natural hot springs in the middle of the mountains, so after 5 days of trekking, you will love soaking in the hot springs and enjoying a beer. You will also have the opportunity to buy handmade crafts from the locals. After saying goodbye to our muleteer, we will take our private vehicle and return to Cusco in about 3 hours, where we will drop you off at your hotel. We will arrive in Cusco around 7 pm.

M&R Travel Recommendations – Machupicchu Expeditions
If you’re planning a trip to Cusco, it’s important to be prepared to make the most of every experience, whether you’re taking day tours or multi-week expeditions. Here are some key recommendations:
- Acclimatization: Cusco sits at over 3,300 m.a.s.l. (10,800 ft). To avoid altitude sickness, we recommend resting on your first day, staying hydrated, and drinking coca or muña tea.
- Proper Clothing: Cusco’s weather varies by season. Bring layered clothing, a rainproof jacket for unexpected showers, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Required Documents: To enter Machu Picchu, you must carry your passport or ID. If you’re a student, a valid student ID may grant you ticket discounts.
- Tickets & Reservations: Machu Picchu and other attractions require advance tickets. Book early, especially during peak season (May to September).
- Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. UV radiation in Cusco and the Peruvian highlands is intense.
- Cash & Payments: While many places accept cards, it’s best to carry cash in soles (PEN) for small expenses, especially in markets or rural communities.
- Respect for Culture & Environment: Cusco and its surroundings hold immense historical and natural value. Follow site regulations, avoid littering, and respect local traditions.
- Trust the Experts: For the best experience, book with specialized agencies like M&R Machupicchu Expeditions, offering tours designed for all types of travelers—ensuring quality, safety, and unforgettable adventures.
